Visiting author/illustrator, Ashley Wolff has created two new illustrations…she’s feeling inspired knowing that she’ll be visiting ASIJ in May!
Award-winning author/illustrator Ashley Wolff will visit the ASIJ elementary school May 3-5th thanks to a generous grant from our Chofu PTA. Since the age of 5 Ashley knew that she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. She has lived her passion and has illustrated over sixty books. She is well known for the modern classic Miss Bindergarten series. While at ASIJ she will conduct both large group assemblies and small group workshops.
An exciting tradition that always accompanies an author’s visit is a book signing by the author. Signed books make great souvenirs for your child. I am writing now to provide you with the opportunity to order one of Ashley’s books. Ashley will sign purchased books during her visit.
Please respond to the Google Doc that I sent in a parent email. There will also be order forms available at the library circulation desk. Due to limited availability, orders will be placed on a first come, first serve basis. Once the order is placed, I will send you an email requesting payment. Please send the amount due in a sealed envelope. Clearly mark the envelope “Library Book Order”, child’s name and class and have your child deliver the envelope to the ES Library by Thursday, March 24, 2016.

The week of January 25-29, ASIJ has the honor of hosting the internationally recognized and award-winning poet, Naomi Shihab Nye. Our fifth graders will have the opportunity to work with Ms. Nye in both large and small groups throughout the week of her visit.
In 2009, Ms. Nye was named as one of PeaceByPeace.com’s first peace heroes. Additionally, she has has won many awards and fellowships, among them four Pushcart Prizes, the Jane Addams Children’s Book award, the Paterson Poetry Prize and in 2013 the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature.
In addition to having works at the adult and young adult levels, she also has several works appropriate for our upper elementary students. The following books, written by Ms. Nye, are available in the ASIJ elementary library.
“We’re all poets when we’re little and some of us just keep up the habit!” William Stafford
“There’s A Secret to Writing Books”
Kate Klise was an entertaining and engaging presenter for students in Grades 3 – 5. She shared a few of her secrets to writing books and inspired young writers using anecdotal stories, read alouds, planning charts, photographs and student participation. Students even learned a few new planning strategies. The 1-1-1 strategy (character/problem/action) was introduced to Gr. 3 students. Students in Grades 4-5 learned about the planning circle used by screenwriters in Hollywood.
On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, Kate Klise will visit the ASIJ ES Library . Kate is an award-winning author who has received several nationally recognized awards. Her most recent series, Three-Ring Rascals was selected as a Junior Library Guild recipient. Her book, The Show Must Go On (#1 Three Ring Rascals) has been short listed as a 2015 Sakura Medal Picture Book.
